Big 4 Interview Questions Mini Guide

Big 4 Interviews

The Big 4 accounting firms are Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC. Landing a job at one of these prestigious firms is very competitive, but can be a springboard for the rest of your career. Having one of the big 4 names on your resume gives you instant credibility and makes you a sought-after employee for other employers.

Interview Format

Big 4 interviews typically have 2 parts:

  1. Behavioral interview: Questions focused on your past experiences, resume, leadership skills, ability to work in a team, etc. Prepare STAR stories ahead of time.
  2. Technical interview: Questions testing your accounting, finance and Excel skills. Brush up on your technical knowledge beforehand.

Some tips: Show enthusiasm and passion, don’t be afraid to ask clarifying questions, relate everything back to the role and company. Firm knowledge is important.

Big 4 Interview Questions and Answers

Here are some of the most common Big 4 interview questions, with tips for responding:

Why do you want to work here?

Do your research beforehand and emphasize shared values, training, clients in the city you are applying for, leadership opportunities, etc.

Walk me through your resume.

Don’t just regurgitate your resume back to the interviewer. Provide background, connect past experiences back to skills needed for the role.

What is your greatest weakness?

This question can be difficult to answer. Choose a non-critical weakness and emphasize what you are doing to improve it. Don’t say you “work too hard”. You should give a real weakness, but nothing that will ruin your changes of getting a job.

Describe a time you faced a conflict and how you handled it.

Use the STAR method to demonstrate conflict resolution and teamwork skills. Focus on the resolution and the leadership steps you took to resolve the situation.

Why should we hire you?

Connect your skills, accomplishments and values back to the role and company. Show what unique strengths you can bring. Confidence is key.

Do you have any questions for me?

The interviewer will likely give you time to ask questions. Be sure to ask smart, well-informed questions that show your interest in and knowledge of the firm.

Preparation is your best weapon for Big 4 interviews. Know your resume cold, understand and articulate what value you bring to the firm, and brush up on technical skills. At Big4interviews.com, we have created the best online resource for acing your interviews.
